 The second annual Greater Travelers Rest Chamber of Commerce Chili Cook-off and Vendor Fair is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, at Trailblazer Park, the future Travelers Rest cultural and performing arts center located on Wilhelm Winter Street.

Travelers Rest named 2013 Urban Conservationist of the Year

Travelers Rest named 2013 Urban Conservationist of the YearThe city of Travelers Rest was named the 2013 Urban Conservationist of the Year by the Greenville County Soil and Water Conservation District.

According to Conservation District Chairman Robert Hanley, Travelers Rest received the recognition for its development of a pedestrian-friendly downtown, dedication to litter prevention programs and support of the GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail as well as the transformation of Buncombe Road Park and encouragement of "numerous outdoor recreation opportunities”.

Travelers Rest votes to annex Furman University into city

At its regularly scheduled meeting Thursday night, Travelers Rest City Council unanimously approved an ordinance to annex Furman University and Furman Foundation properties into its city limits.

Multiple properties – including the university campus, the golf course, the Vinings at Duncan Chapel apartments and the Woodlands at Furman retirement community are included in the annexation.

The annexation will increase the size of Travelers Rest by over 900 acres, about one-third of its current size.

Travelers Rest 'paints the town purple'

Travelers Rest business owners and municipal employees have been busy “painting the town purple” to help raise awareness for the Travelers Rest Area Relay For Life, an annual American Cancer Society (ACS) fundraising event. 

Buildings and lampposts throughout town are decorated with all things purple – purple ribbon, purple bows, purple signs, purple flowers, and purple wreaths, to name a few – in support of the campaign.

The relay, during which teams camp out overnight and take turns walking the track, is scheduled to take place at the site of the former Travelers Rest High School on Wilhelm Winter Street in Travelers Rest on Friday, April 26 beginning at 7 p.m.

Travelers Rest Artists Alliance seeks members

The Travelers Rest Artists Alliance is seeking member artists in a variety of disciplines – including visual, literary, performing and culinary arts – to join the newly-formed organization. 

The Alliance plans to sponsor art festivals, concerts and recitals, theater and music workshops, literary performances and performing arts shows, among other things. The group also plans to conduct art classes, theater and music workshops, mentoring programs and various lectures.
